Assignment 1

Act 1 Scene 3

  • Witches (consider as one character)
The witches are like fortune tellers and they have this evil with them with their stories. They say things like killing pigs and punishing a sailor.
  • Macbeth
Macbeth seems to be a very nice man and highly known. He is predicted to become king and becomes a king at the end of the scene. Hes quite amazed that the witches were correct too.
  • Banquo
Banquo wishes to be a king and is a bit jealous when he hears that Macbeth will be one, but he won't.
  • Ross
Ross is just a messenger that came to tell Macbeth that the king was pleased by what he had done. Also saying he is now the thane of Cawdor.
  • Angus
Angus is another messenger that tells Macbeth and Banquo of Macbeths becoming a thane and how it came to be.

  • OUTLINE
So in act one scene 3, the witches are in the scene and are just talking about their own lives and what had happened. One witch is talking about getting revenge on a sailor. Then they hear drums and then the Macbeth and Banquo appears. Banquo is quite rude and questioning them if they are male. Soon afterwards, the witches call Macbeth a thane and say he will become a king and Banquo will only raise kings. The witches leave and the messengers, Ross and Angus come to inform Macbeth that he was considered a thane by the king.

  • Explain the conflicts introduced in 1.3.
The conflicts in 1.3 are the witches' fortune telling. It causes Banquo to be quite jealous and not happy and Macbeth to be quite confused. This had come true. It made Macbeth quite confused and surprised by the news.

Assignment 2

Act 1 Scene 5-6

  • What do we learn about Lady Macbeth in these scenes?
We learn that Lady Macbeth is a two sided person. In front of Macbeth and Duncan, she acts very kindly like in lines 10-20 in act 1 scene 6, Duncan and Lady Macbeth talks and she is quite kind. However, before this in act 1 scene 5, she wishes and thinks of killing others to gain the crown in lines 40-44. This shows she is very evil.

  • How might Lady Macbeth answer the question “What is the meaning of life?” Explain your answer.
Lady Macbeth will most likely say that life doesn’t have meaning to it. This is because she thinks for the best of Macbeth, he must kill or do anything to get the crown.. From line 41 to 51, she says things like “unsex me here” and make “thick my blood,” which is right before her killing another person.

  • Identify and write out two of Lady Macbeth’s lines that are particularly striking. Explain why you selected the lines.
“Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts” (1.5.40-41) This line shows her thoughts on the world. As she says this to get rid of her human self to be more evil and be able to kill to gain this crown, which sounds quite psychopathic. “that my keen knife see not the wound it makes,” (1.5.51) shows how she wishes to kill yet not be considered a sinner or doesn’t wish to do so like Macbeth.

  • Identify one significant word that Lady Macbeth uses in 1.5 or 1.6, and define both the denotation and connotation of the word. Explain why you think the word is significant.
Unsex
Denotation
deprive of gender, sexuality
Connotation
Negative connotation is used here. She wants to lose her gender while she does a horrible deed that females should never do. So she wants to be "unsexed" to complete her task.
This word is significant because she wishes to be stripped of her sex when/if she kills another person because she doesn’t want to look not like a woman. If she weren't she'd feel guilt for doing such an evil deed and not be like other females and have pride in themselves.

Assignment 3

Act 1

  • "Why has Macbeth decided to kill King Duncan by the end of Act 1?"
I believe that Macbeth decides to kill Duncan at the end of act 1 due to the continuous rambling and peer pressure given to him by his wife, Lady Macbeth. I believe this because at first, he decides not to commit to this act, but Lady Macbeth hears this and starts to tease and make fun of him. "And live a coward in thine own esteem." (1.7.44) He is still a bit scared of committing such an act and questions her of how they will do it and how they won't get caught. She tells him and convinces him that it will be easy and there will be no worry of getting caught doing it in lines 64-73. She also says "And we will not fail."(1.7.62) to emphasize that they will succeed with ease to get him to agree. After that, he is pretty sure that he will go through with this.

Assignment 4

Act 2

  • How does Macbeth react to the killing of Duncan? Why does he react this way?
Macbeth reacts to the killing of Duncan by acting traumatized. This reaction is shown when he was only with Lady Macbeth showing that how he acted was not a fake. "Sleep no more" (2.2.39) Macbeth says this showing his guilt that he feels for killing Duncan because he won't sleep anymore for doing this deed. He also shows this in 2.3.93-98 as he talks of how life is of less or no meaning and shows a changed view on the world. "All is but toys. Renown and grace is dead." (2.3.96) shows his change in thought of how no more joy is in the world. He has a head and regrets doing this act in killing him and feels bad.
  • How does Lady Macbeth react to the killing of Duncan? Why does she react this way?
Lady Macbeth reacts totally differently to the killing of Duncan when compared to Macbeth. She is totally calm and tries to sooth Macbeth and make him feel better. Macbeth sees his hands and say it is a "sorry sight" and she replies by saying, "A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight." (2.2.25) She also says to not think about it because it makes them regret in 2.2.37-38. She also takes the daggers and places them to frame others by herself for him to show that she doesn't care as long as they get away with it. She was a person that is quite evil and wants everything.

Assignment 6

Act 5

How has Macbeth transformed by the end of the play?
  • Two Quotes
MACBETH
Bring me no more reports. Let them fly all. Till Birnam Wood remove to DunsinaneI cannot taint with fear. What’s the boy Malcolm? Was he not born of woman? The spirits that know All mortal consequences have pronounced me thus:“Fear not, Macbeth. No man that’s born of woman Shall e'er have power upon thee.” Then fly, false thanes,And mingle with the English epicures. The mind I sway by and the heart I bear Shall never sag with doubt nor shake with fear.
Citation: 5.3.1-10

MACBETH
She should have died hereafter. There would have been a time for such a word.Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,Creeps in this petty pace from day to dayTo the last syllable of recorded time,And all our yesterdays have lighted foolsThe way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor playerThat struts and frets his hour upon the stageAnd then is heard no more. It is a taleTold by an idiot, full of sound and fury,Signifying nothing.
Citation: 5.5.16-28

  • write a paragraph to explain each piece of textual evidence
I believe that the first piece was very important because he is very cocky and "invincible" now. Before he was very humble and did not believe in the witches prophecy. Since two of his prophecies had reluctantly come true, even though he had made the course for it to occur, it had happened. However, now he believes that he is invincible until the Birnam Wood reaches Dusinane. He also says this showing his power. Before he never had nor even had power and now is a power monger and would kill to get it. Before he needed great persuasion by his wife.

I believe that the second quote shows Macbeth's change as well because he had once loved his wife and now... he doesn't really care much that she is dead as long as he still has the throne. He had taken his wife to the hospital before the quote and it shows his change because he used to be the one that was traumatized from killing, but now had switched to Lady Macbeth. His love and care for the human life had disappeared as he says "Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing." He shows no emotion with his wife's death and only wishes to keep power as shown in the first quote.

Assignment 7

Whole play

  • What is the main idea of the story?
I think the main idea of the story is to show how evil we actually are when they want something like when they gain power they get greedy and could become evil and emotionless like how Macbeth had become. Take for instance his wife's death. After she had died, he did not cared and just wished that she had died a different time. He says, "Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing." (5.5.27-28) showing no emotion toward his loves death.
  • What can we learn from these characters? Select one or two characters and explain your answer.
We can learn from Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Macbeth continues to kill after he has killed once and makes him more greedy for power. It shows that we have to have self control and not take that first step in the wrong path. Lady Macbeth also is more determined to kill at first, which was the mistake she made. The thing we can learn from her is not to get greedy. She had wanted power and can find another way to get there. She had seduced Macbeth into killing Duncan.
  • Do you see recurring images, words, deeds, situations, consequences, mistakes? Select two items from the preceding list and give examples from the play.
Consistent killing and greediness and also mental breakdowns are shown frequently throughout the play. The horrible deed of killing by Macbeth occurs over and over from Duncan to Macduff's family. I also see lots of greed and evil whenever Macbeth talks about wanting to keep his throne and how he listens to the prophecies. A final one are mental breakdowns. The first one was Macbeth after he had killed Duncan and started hearing voices. Then was Lady Macbeth with the sleepwalking and the bloodstain on her hand.
